13 July 2026: Want to stretch your budget?

Looking for ways to make your grocery budget go further? Start with these five affordable staples (prices may vary, but they are generally budget-friendly):

• 1 kg oats
• 1 kg frozen mixed vegetables
• 6 eggs
• Two-minute noodles
• 1 tin of tuna

These simple ingredients can be turned into a variety of filling, nutritious meals. For example, oats can be used to make oats and banana bars or oats and banana pancakes, while a tin of tuna makes a quick and healthy salad. Watch how our Dietetics and Nutrition students turn these ingredients into delicious snacks and a fresh salad.

You can also warm up with these budget-friendly soups:

  • Two-minute noodle and chicken soup (recipe included)
  • Pumpkin soup
  • Tomato and lentil soup (add soya mince for extra protein)

Tip: Use Mervite to thicken your soups, making them even more filling and satisfying.

Give these ideas a try and see how far your budget can go!
