The vision of the School for Open Learning is:

Through the School for Open Learning, the University of the Free State will harness a wide range of open-learning principles and methods to broaden access by means of distance education (blended learning) and continuing education to deserving students who are unable to study at the university through traditional, full-time, on-campus higher-education programmes.

Given this vision, its mission is to:

Function as a coordinating centre for all activities that seek to harness open-learning principles and methods to broaden access to higher-education opportunities for all South Africans.
