The Division French has already existed under various names since 1912 (then as part of the Department of German). The Department of French was officially instituted in 1959. Although the most attention is still paid to language, culture and literature, the course also includes a strong business component.

Lectures are supported by films, documentary films, chansons and the multitude of possibilities offered by the internet. The division also has excellent relations with the French Embassy’s Bureau de Coopération Éducative (BCE) in Johannesburg, which offers excellent opportunities for study bursaries in France.

At the annual prize-giving function of the Faculty of the Humanities, the French Embassy Book Prize is awarded to the Best Senior Student, as well as a book prize for the Best First-year Student, donated by the BCE.

The current staff members have all undergone training overseas. The French Library, built up over years by the previous Head of Department, Prof J Joubert, is one of the best in the country and prides itself on major donations from, amongst others, the French Rotary.
