CHRIS VORSTER UFS CURRICULUM VITAE (2023)

Brief Narrative on my PERSONAL BACKGROUND

I was born in Pretoria in 1970 and moved to Bellville (Cape Town) in 1980 where I matriculated in 1987 (D.F Malan High School). After school I completed my two years of compulsory military service as a lieutenant at the Infantry School in Oudtshoorn and in 1990 I commenced my drama studies at the University of Stellenbosch. In 1994, I got married to Liza (Le Roux) and in 2000 – when I started working for the SABC – we moved from Bellville to Centurion with our two sons Eben and Leroux. We relocated to Bloemfontein in 2015 when I joined the UFS as a lecturer in film and television.

Brief Narrative on my PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

I have been writing, directing, and acting on stage and television since 1995. When I joined the SABC 2 soap opera, 7de Laan – as an actor – I immediately started training as a multi-camera director and consequently worked in both disciplines from 2000 to the end of 2014. I eventually directed more than 600 episodes and I was also intensely involved with the story development and training of new directors. In my seven years at the UFS, I have had the privilege to work creatively both as a lecturer and an industry professional. In 2022, I received my Ph.D. and completed a book on the legendary TV producer, Franz Marx.

Research

Franz Marx (actor, director, writer and producer) is the main subject, theme, and focus of my current research. His personal view on the range of factors that influenced him in creating the first Afrikaans television daily serial drama is the principal objective of my research. The study is placed within the methodology of practice-based research and utilises this method to acquire and verify information concerning Marx as the central figure in the conception of the first Afrikaans daily serial drama. Various South African film and TV-practitioners assist in contextualising Marx’s oral-historical narrative within the local entertainment industry. International and South African literature further contextualises Marx’s contribution and places his creative mechanics into perspective. The study contributes to the existing historical records on Franz Marx’s extensive career and the origin of daily serial dramas and soap operas in South Africa.
