Area(s) of Interest

Afrikaans and/or Dutch drama studies - This field of study is based on the study of approaches in the literature, with specific reference to the drama as genre. It includes semiotics, hermeneutics, reception theory, and others. A field of study that could fit in with this involves the dramatological analysis of specific texts against the background of named approaches. A combination of the above-mentioned would form a more complete unit with a fundamental theoretical basis, together with practical applications and interpretations of applicable drama texts. The study of certain drama mediums such as the traditional stage drama, the radio drama, the television drama, cabaret, one-man shows and community theatre, with practical applications to relevant texts are also presented.

Afrikaans and/or Dutch film studies  - This field of study is based on the study of Afrikaans and/or Dutch film with practical applications to relevant film texts. Here the distinctive characteristics of for instance the traditional stage drama, the radio drama, the television drama, cabaret, one-man shows and community theatre could be studies comparatively. Thereafter different types of texts could be measured and evaluated on grounds of their specific distinctive characteristics.

Theatre and Film Criticism - This field of study is based on the study of critical methodology within a theatre and cinematographic context. It provides a series of theoretical aids that are needed for well-considered cultural self-reflection, as well as critical thinking and textual analysis. The main aim of this module it to lead students through a process that enables them to evaluate and interpret critically, but also to generate knowledge within a contemporary South African context and even outside those borders regarding theatre and film criticism.
