Acting (THEP3700)
The module focuses on acting in a production/s, acting and directing for theatre, film and television. Students present monologues and scenes from selected plays weekly, where students receive feedback on their performance and technique. Students are continuously assessed on their progression and knowledge of theory related to the module. The Arts Management unit will guide you through marketing and funding processes that you will need to successfully engage with the performing arts industry.
Unit 1: Arts Management
In this unit, the student will be expected to understand the basic principles regarding managing their own affairs as an artist in the South African Performing Arts Industry. The purpose of this module is to develop an understanding of managing yourself as a business. Furthermore, several topics will be covered toward business and project management’s primary principles to provide the student with the necessary tools to assist with future creative endeavours.
The unit is divided into the following aspects:
• The business of the performing arts
• Fundraising
• Brand building
After successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:
• Plan, create and present a fundraising proposal
• Prepare and compile an arts management portfolio which includes a CV, a digital profile and a showreel.
Unit 2: Acting for film/television
In this unit, it will be required of a student, as an individual or as part of a group, to be able to practically apply the principles of acting for television and film practical assignments such as starring in short film THEF3700 students.
Unit 3: Acting in productions
In this unit, it will be required of a student, as part of a group, to be able to practically apply advanced acting techniques and theories in selected theatre productions or one-act plays.
Unit 4: Contemporary performance
In this unit, it will be required of you, as part of a group, to be able to practically be involved in the creating, acting, or directing of Avant-Garde productions..
Unit 5: Acting practical
In this unit, it will be required of you, as an individual or as part of a group, to be involved in practical acting exercises. You will also present monologues and scenes from selected plays every week, where you will receive feedback on your performance and technique in order to build on your own audition portfolio. These monologues and scenes will be assessed during a public examination.
