BACHELOR OF ARTS HONOURS WITH SPECIALISATION IN LINGUISTICS

The BA Honours in Linguistics is a postgraduate qualification that prepares students for research-based postgraduate studies in Linguistics. It serves to consolidate and enhance the student’s expertise, as well as to develop research capacity in the methodologies and techniques of the candidate’s area of specialisation. The qualification requires a high level of aptitude for working with theories and excellent analytical skills.

Admission requirements:
Achieve a minimum average of 65% in an applicable undergraduate qualification (exit level 7).

Modules:
Compulsory module

  • LINM6808 Research Report: Linguistics (32 credits)

In 2022, students are expected to register for the modules given below:

  • LINO6814 Sociolinguistics (16 credits)
  • LINS6814 Syntax (16 credits)
  • LIND6814 Language Documentation (16 credits)
  • LINA6824 Language Acquisition (16 credits)
  • LINE6824 Semiotics and Society (16 credits)
  • LINK6824 Khoesan Languages (16 credits)

MASTER OF ARTS WITH SPECIALISATION IN LINGUISTICS

The MA with specialisation in Linguistics serves to teach and train researchers to make a contribution to the development of knowledge at an advanced level, or to prepare graduated students for an advanced and specialised professional career in linguistics.

Admission requirements:
Achieve a minimum average of 65% in an applicable Honours qualification (exit level 8).

Curriculum:
Students write a dissertation (Module LIND8900) or two interrelated publishable manuscripts or published articles in accredited journals (LINA8900) on a theme in consultation with the supervisor and the academic head of the department.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY WITH SPECIALISATION IN LINGUISTICS

For the PhD in Linguistics the candidate is expected to undertake research at the most advanced academic level, which culminates in the submission, assessment and acceptance of a thesis. Candidates are expected to demonstrate an advanced level of research ability and to make a meaningful and original academic contribution in the relevant area of linguistics.

Admission requirements:
Achieve a minimum average of 70% in an applicable Masters qualification (exit level 9).

Curriculum:
Students have to write a thesis (LINP9100) or three interrelated, publishable manuscripts or published articles in accredited journals (LINA9100) about a research topic selected in consultation with the supervisor and the academic head of the department.
