Faculty of the Humanities Mandela Day with the Psychology Students Association

On 19 July 2019, the Faculty of the Humanities celebrated Mandela with the PSA at the Rag Farm. The students were provided with an opportunity to better themselves and get information on opportunities of that lie ahead for them as psychology graduates. Mabatho Ntsieng, the scholarship of engagement officer, encouraged the students to continue to be of service to the community of Bloemfontein. Doing community engagement is not just about improving one’s CV, or bettering one’s chances of being accepted into the psychology master’s programme. There are internal benefits to being part of the PSA. Students are encouraged to do reflections on a regular basis, which will enable personal growth and aid in understanding the benefits of community engagement. The Faculty of the Humanities prides itself on producing graduates who understand civic responsibility. Empathy, Knowledge and Involvement are the three values that are promoted in the PSA and these values assist in development of well-rounded individuals.

Dr Kometsi from the Department of Psychology and Ms K Pillay, a student in the master’s programme, were invited as guest speakers. Most of these students aspire to become psychologists without knowing what it all entails. This was an interactive session where students could ask questions and where they were provided with practical examples, which helped the students to understand what the master’s selection process entails and what the profession is really about.

The UFS Careers Office was invited to explain to the students what changes were already happening in the world of work and how to upskill and reskill themselves in order to stay more relevant to the forever-changing world.
