PROGRAMME INFORMATION

Name of SLP: Applied Plant Nematology
SLP Code:

SCOPE OF INFORMATION

Short Description of the SLP: The development of a Short Learning Programme (SLP) in Applied Plant Nematology responds to the rising importance of nematode management in agriculture and the need for specialised expertise. Plant-parasitic nematodes threaten global crop production, causing major economic and environmental losses.

This SLP will equip agronomists, extension officers, researchers, and other agricultural professionals with the skills to identify, monitor, and control nematodes using sustainable approaches. By strengthening their expertise, participants will contribute to improved crop productivity and long-term agricultural sustainability.

The programme also addresses the needs of stakeholders, including agricultural organisations, research institutions, and government agencies, who require skilled personnel to manage nematode-related challenges and implement integrated pest management strategies.
Admission Requirements: Minimum Matric certificate with basic knowledge of nematology, microscopy, and biology skills.
Learning Duration: 2 Weeks
Costs: To be confirmed upon request
Language of Tuition:English
Mode of Delivery: Blended
Campus: Bloemfontein
Learning Level:
Dates of Programme: To be confirmed upon request
Nature of Programme: Competence Based
Programme Structure: The programme offers 19 different lectures by internal and external experts over the course of ten days. These lectures cover various subjects from nematode identification, molecular methods for nematode characterisation, economic important nematodes associated with different crops and nematode management.
Assessments: Following the conclusion of the face-to-face component, learners will be required to complete an examination covering both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, including the identification of nematode genera observed during the programme and key morphological structures used in identification. The practical assessment will constitute a significant portion of the overall evaluation.

The theoretical examination will account for 55% of the final grade, and the practical examination for 40%. Both practical and theoretical components will contribute to the final assessment, with successful completion requiring a minimum score of 50% for the awarding of a certificate.
