PROGRAMME INFORMATION

Name of SLP:Free-living Nematode Identification for Ecologists and Taxonomists
SLP Code:

SCOPE OF INFORMATION

Short Description of the SLP: This short learning programme utilising a blended learning approach addresses fundamental free-living nematode systematics, trophic group identification, the identification of representative free-living nematode genera from their respective families and, aspects of nematode ecology. Participants will have the opportunity to
acquaint themselves with diverse nematode genera commonly encountered in routine soil sample analyses, and also acquire essential knowledge on utilising Nematode-Based Indices (NBI's) and accurately interpreting findings through NINJA (Nematode Indicator Joint Analysis).
Admission Requirements: NSc OR BSc degree OR Basic knowledge in nematode morphology and techniques OR appropriate plant-parasitic nematode short course OR similar.
Learning Duration: 2 Weeks (10 days face-face; 2 days online)
Costs: To be confirmed upon request
Language of Tuition:English
Mode of Delivery: Blended
Campus:Bloemfontein
Learning Level: 5
Dates of Programme: To be confirmed upon request
Nature of Programme: Competence Based
Programme Structure: The face-to-face component forms the larger component of this SLP and is practical based. The structure of the programme includes morning lecture sessions of representative free-living nematode genera from their respective families.  After the lecture, an interactive microscope system will be used to visualise on a projector screen, the respective genera and the most important morphological features use to identify them.  Afternoon sessions will continue with microscopy work, having participants look and draw by means of using iPads, some of the important morphological structures of the various genera. Participants will also have the opportunity to look at live samples and identify the genera covered in the morning sessions. The online ecology component will be an interactive discussion session on Nematode Based Indices, how to use the online platform NINJA, as well as how to interpret the analyses.
Assessments: After the end of the face-to-face component, the participants will be expected to write an examination comprised of both theory and practical questions (which consists of identification of the nematode genera viewed during the 9 days as well as the identification of important morphological structures used in the identification). The practical part forming the larger component. For the online component, participants will be given an assignment  using a data set and asked to analyse and interpret the data. This would then be written as a short report and submitted a week after the completion of the online component.
