The School of Financial Planning Law at the University of the Free State, together with the Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority (INSETA), made a difference in the lives of students studying for a postgraduate diploma in Financial Planning, the advanced postgraduate diploma in Financial Planning, or a BIuris degree.
INSETA recently made R950 000 available for bursaries to the UFS’ School of Financial Planning Law. According to Shirly Hyland from the School of Financial Planning Law, the school is tasked with informing and selecting students for the bursaries. Unemployed students have to maintain an average of 55% and must be undergraduate or postgraduate Financial Planning Law students in order to qualify for the bursary.
The bursary covers, among others, book, tuition, accommodation, and registration fees, as well as equipment.
Of the R950 000, the school has already paid out R729 165 in bursaries. The bursaries vary from a lesser amount of R1084,67 for textbooks to as much as R40 256 for tuition, accommodation, and book fees. Fifty-eight students have received bursaries so far.
According to Hyland, the bursaries really made a difference in the lives of various students. One student has previously written all his assignments by hand. Since he received a bursary, he was able to type his assignments. Yet another student was obliged to stop his studies at the end of the year because he didn’t have money for another year at university. With the bursary he is now able to continue his studies.
“The bursaries ease the financial stress of our students and help them to pay attention to their studies,” says Hyland.
