UFS students: The cheerleaders

The Kovsies Multilingual Mokete (festival) is an initiative of the University of the Free State (UFS) to promote multilingualism.

The 2022 Mokete festival took place on 21 October at the South Campus. The event was filled with performances by BigDada & BE, Liv Die, Loyiso, and many more.

The Mokete encompasses and celebrates many cultural manifestations - in visual art, poetry, storytelling, theatre, music, and song - by various linguistic groups and in the several significant languages at the UFS (i.e., English, Afrikaans, Sesotho, isiZulu, and Sign Language).

Students and staff from diverse faculties and departments throughout our three campuses took part in highlighting Kovsies' multicultural capabilities.

“We came with a different twist; today, we brought a live band. We have shared various stages as a couple; the chemistry is there, and it’s good doing so with someone you trust.

As a UFS alumna, it’s always good to be back and experience the university’s culture; it motivates us to create more music, because we come from these grounds and have performed on these platforms several times.

We hope people are ready to listen and hit the dance floor,” said Bloemfontein’s ‘finest couple’,

- BigDada & BE.
“I’m so delighted, it’s been a learning journey for me, and there are so many lessons to take since I joined the university at the beginning of this year. Multilingualism is at the foundation of transformation at the UFS, considering that it is related to social justice and equity for previously marginalised languages. It is a driving force for social cohesion that will revitalise teaching and learning environments by giving students access. The UFS is one of the most diverse universities I've ever worked at. We are diverse, but we have the same objective, and translanguaging will assist us in achieving this through Vision 130. We want to produce multilingual students who are prepared to tackle the diverse world out there, and the only place to prepare them is here, at the university,”

- Dr Nomalungelo Ngubane, Director of the UFS Academy for Multilingualism.
“Languages are significant, because they bring out a different side of a person and tell a story about your background and the future.

As artists, we communicate through the universal language – music; even when you do not understand the lyrics, you can feel the emotions and relate through the beats and instruments.

Thus, we include song lyrics so that everyone can sing what they understand, and learn other languages,”

- Loyiso Gijana.
