Duration

The programme is completed over a two-year period.

Registration

Registration is scheduled for January to February on the Bloemfontein campus or via electronic communication, in accordance with the UFS official calendar, to assist students with academic advice and processing of registration.

Mode of programme delivery

Students have to attend two compulsory five day workshops/contact sessions in the Bloemfontein campus or Midrand during each year they are registered. One contact session per semester.

Exams are written twice a year in the Bloemfontein Campus and other approved regional exam centres over a maximum 3-week period. These include the first semester main exam and end of the year main exam. All additional exams are written on the Bloemfontein Campus only. All study material, assessments and learning activities are communicated via an e-platform (online) called Blackboard. It is therefore a compulsory requirement that students ensure that they have their own computer with adequate internet access in order to successfully complete these programmes.

Credit recognition and transfer

Recognition of credits for equivalent modules obtained through other professionally accredited relevant BSc Honours programmes is not automatic, but may be approved after an evaluation based on the following criteria:

  • Module credits (at least same amount of credits or more)
  • NQF level (same NQF level)
  • Similarity of module content and
  • Shelf life of the module (how long ago it was completed)

Recognition of modules cannot be guaranteed prior to registration. It is the responsibility of the student to apply for credit recognition and provide the curriculum/syllabus that indicates the above criteria. The following general rules apply:

No more than 50 percent of the credits may be transferred from the completed qualification(s) to another qualification, subject to the provision that (aa) at least 50 percent of the credits for the new qualification be earned at this University; and (bb) a maximum of 25 percent of the credits accrued at the highest NQF level in the previously completed qualification(s) be acknowledged for another qualification.

With regard to an incomplete qualification, all the applicable credits may be granted for the new qualification, except in respect of a student from another institution of higher education, in which case no more than 50 percent of the credits required to obtain the qualification may be recognised from those modules completed at the other institution. In the latter case, there is a restriction of a maximum of 25 percent of credits acquired and earned at the highest NQF level.

General Rules on period of registration also apply. Note that General Rules are subject to change.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Access to the Honours programme through the RPL process is not available.

Appeals

All appeals pertaining to the implementation of the General Rules are considered by the relevant Faculty Readmission Appeals Committee, and the decision of this committee will be final. Students who wish to appeal for readmission should contact the relevant Programme Director for guidance.
