Short CV

After completing his undergraduate BSc in Genetics and Human Physiology from the UFS in 1998, Hanno completed an Honours degree in Genetics from the UFS in 1999. He worked as a senior scientist and quality and operations manager with the South African Doping Control Laboratory (SADoCoL) for 25 years. After completing a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) in 2017, he served as Director of SADoCoL from 2020 to 2026.

Hanno developed himself as an academic leader with substantial experience in applied analytical science, genetics and proteomics, laboratory governance and accreditation, and strategic leadership within a higher education environment. He conveys proven expertise in translating scientific methodology into internationally accredited services, sustainable business models, and industry-relevant applications. Extensive experience in laboratory governance, quality management systems, and international collaboration. Strong alignment with academic teaching in Genetics and Applied Sciences, as well as the commercialisation of scientific projects.

With his experience in accreditation, Hanno is also Project Coordinator for the new School for Veterinary Sciences, where his focus is on the translation of academic content to the facilities and accredited laboratories needed for the “day-one” skills of new Veterinarians to be trained.

His teaching philosophy is founded on the integration of strong theoretical grounding with applied scientific practice. With a background in genetics, analytical science, and highly regulated laboratory environments, I emphasize the importance of scientific rigor, critical thinking, and ethical responsibility in all commercial, teaching, and supervisory activities.
