The Centre for Global Change (CGC) recently hosted its first team-building excursion at ATKV Drakensville and All Out Adventures for its 2024 cohort of honours, master’s, and doctoral students.

The programme included activities such as abseiling, problem-solving, and obstacle courses designed to challenge individuals and cultivate group collaboration.

The purpose of the excursion was to help the cohort – which includes students from different faculties and campuses – to get to know each other and form a broad network of support. This network can be particularly valuable for activities such as fieldwork, facilitating transdisciplinary research, and assistance.

In addition, the excursion was set to help the students refresh their minds ahead of the second semester, in line with the theme: ‘Let the inner child heal and the adult mind take a break and exhale’. The various activities helped students to overcome their fears, cultivated a healthy competitive spirit, encouraged support among the team, as well as developed trust and a high group morale.

Many students experienced some of the activities for the first time, allowing them to check items off their bucket list and enjoy a memorable experience. “As CGC, we aim to develop our cohort holistically, nurturing them not only as great academics but also as wholesome and cultured individuals,” said Noxolo Phungula, Project Manager of the centre.
