Awareness

This project will develop your artistic abilities and awaken your creative side. The overall theme of our senior art project is ‘Awareness’ and is done in collaboration with the Institute for Reconciliation and Social Justice. The 27 UFS residences form five colleges that come together to create sculptures that match the theme. The different topics include: Unity, Gender, Race, Diversity, Universal Access, Gender-based Violence, and Mental Health.

The residences are grouped as follows:

CENTRAL: Soetdoring | Wag-’n-Bietjie | Karee | Akasia | Kagiso

NORTH: Welwitchia |Tswelopele | Madelief | Vergeet-My-Nie | Veritas

WEST: ConLaurès | Quteniqua | Abraham Fischer | Imperium | Harmony

EAST: Khayalami | Roosmaryn | Beyers Naude | Arista | Legatum | Sonnedou

SOUTH: Armentum | Villa Bravado | NJ van der Merwe | Emily Hobhouse | Marjolein | Kestell

GATEWAY: Legae

The sculptures are created at the Rag Farm during early February of each year and should last for at least six months. Following our Eco-vehicle challenges, these works are placed around campus to spread the awareness message.

In addition, a large, nine-square-metre canvas is completed and displayed on campus.

The beauty of this project is that it extends the festive beginning-of-the-year activities on campus, reminding us of our opportunities and the needs of others. Make your artistic mark!

Eco-vehicle

Doing your bit for the environment can be a lot of fun! This project will challenge you to come up with solutions for environmental sustainability. Senior students from the different student-life colleges work together to design and decorate an eco-vehicle. On race day, these vehicles are put to the test on a track with creative pit stops along the way. We are looking for efficiency, aesthetics, and speed!

This exciting and festive event is open to the public. Not only do they share in the adrenaline around the track, but also enjoy the creative works that will be displayed on the day. During race day, we share the Kovsie feeling with the world.
