‘Are you man enough?’ Conference on Masculinity

The Masculinity Conference was a collaborative effort between Student Affairs, Kovsie Counselling, the HIV & AIDS Office, and Gender Studies. Conversations at the conference on masculinity investigated what it meant to be a man, and discussed ways to eradicate attitudes of male privilege and gender bias that often result in sexist and sometimes overtly violent behaviour. Mbuyiselo Botha (Sonke Gender Justice), Prof Sandra Swart (Stellenbosch University) and Cesar Lagleva (County of Marin, San Rafael) were some of the experts who shared their ideas, experiences and work conducted in the field of men and masculinities. The themes, of: Men and Sport, Men and Leadership and Men and Violence were covered.
The conference was attended by more than 230 students and staff on 9 September 2011. A charter to redress misplaced perceptions of masculinity was drafted at the conference and paves the way for future initiatives.

The following charter was adopted at the conference:

We, the students, adopt this charter to redress misplaced perceptions of masculinity:

  • We promote additional platforms for masculine identities beyond only sport,
  • We shall no longer succumb to the notion that violence in men is inherent and should be expected,
  • We reject the notion that gender is a basis for superiority and are committed to encouraging understanding and acceptance of all sexual orientations,
  • We aim to open spaces of healing and acknowledge the complexity of the interpretation of holy texts,
  • We are committed to creating the climate of thriving, value-driven leadership,

At the University of the Free State, we imagine these five goals will enrich our society with masculinity for the better as a renewed force for good.
