The ‘First things first’ HIV testing campaign for students was hosted by 17 tertiary institutions in South Africa earlier this year, including the University of the Free State. This campaign is a collaborative effort between Innovative Medicines South Africa (IMSA), Foundation for Professional Development (FPD), United States President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR), South African National Aids Council (SANAC), Higher Education South Africa (HESA), and the Higher Education HIV and Aids Programme (HEAIDS).

The UFS campaign also created the opportunity for students to know their glucose, blood pressure, haemoglobin and cholesterol readings and offered TB screening. All first year students who tested were entered into a competition to stand a chance of winning prizes, the ultimate prize being a Toyota Yaris. The success of the UFS campaign relied on partners such as New Start, Department of Health, Ranbaxy, Path Care and Old Mutual and valuable partnerships were formed.

The campaign took place from the 7th – 11th February 2011 on the Bloemfontein campus and the 3rd – 4th May on South campus. A total of 1255 students tested for HIV at the two campuses.
