Using a drill made easy
Learning the basics about drilling for DIY purposes. Above are: Hannetjie Nagel, Layton McFarlane and Paulina Lebatsa.

Drilling should not be something left as a skill for men only. The Health and Wellness team took it upon themselves to bring in multi-talented business consultant, Layton McFarlane, to demonstrate to audience members how to use a drill. He focused on how to assemble drill components, the necessary safety precautions, and how to drill holes into different surfaces.

McFarlane began by explaining the safety precautions, ranging from the correct equipment to protective gear. It is important to have work gloves, protective clothing such as overalls and/or boots, and ensuring that the drill’s chuck is tight before using it. He also advised that one should not wear any loose items (jewellery). Explaining about the different surfaces one could drill through, McFarlane clarified that, “Each type of surface needs a different drill (and bit) to penetrate that surface.”

The audience learnt that an electric drill was perfect to use in the home, as it is not heavy duty. McFarlance closed with a practical demonstration, allowing members of the audience to take turns in practicing their drilling.
