Next cohort of first-year students selected to take part in the Leadership for Change Programme

Panel interviews to select the next cohort of first-year students for the Leadership for Change Programme took place on the Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa Campuses recently.

From the 275 applications received, 79 students were selected provisionally. A final team of 70 students will be announced after the June exam results have been released and taken into consideration.

This group of students will take part in the first ever Global Leadership Summit on the Bloemfontein Campus from 8 to 20 July 2012. The summit will be attended by about 220 staff members and students from partner universities in the United States of America (USA), Europe, Asia, and the UFS.

The Leadership for Change Programme gives first-year students international exposure to top universities in the world. It is aimed at helping to build a new campus culture of student relations across boundaries. The programme started in September 2010 when 71 students were sent abroad for two weeks and given intense exposure to the academic, social, cultural, and residential lives of students in the USA. The programme was expanded last year when 150 students visited 18 universities in the USA, Europe, and Asia.

Following on the highly successful 2010 and 2011 engagement programmes, the UFS is organising a Global Exchange Summit with partner institutions from the three continents. The main aim is to exchange ideas and international experiences in addressing salient issues around race, racism, racial integration and racial reconciliation in Higher Education.

This year's group of 70 students will take part in the summit and will be travelling abroad in 2013, along with a new group of 80 first-years, who will be selected next year.
