Khanyisa Chawane claims victory as best netball player

Khanyisa Chawane, star centre player of the Free State, Mangaung, and Kovsie netball teams, was again the standout player at a national tournament. Hardly a month after she was named Player of the Tournament at the conclusion of the Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League, her performance for the Mangaung Metro at the National Championship in Port Elizabeth last week earned her another two awards. She was again recognised as the Player of the Tournament and the best centre-court player.

Khanyisa, universally known as KC, is the first player to receive the Player of the Tournament accolade at both these tournaments in the same year. The Mangaung Metro netball team finished in second place after losing in the final by 34-47 to the Tshwane netball team.

Chawane, who captained the South African U21 side last year, was announced as one of the players in the senior Protea squad on Saturday. Meagan Roux and Karla Pretorius are the other Kovsie players in the squad of 26 that will be whittled down to 12 after a training camp in August. KovsieSport staff member, Maryka Holtzhausen, also features in the group.

UFS players that will be invited to trials for the President’s XII (Protea B) and Fast5 teams, include Tanya Mostert, Alicia Puren, Marétha van Heerden, Khomotso Mamburu, and Lefébre Rademan. Mostert played for the Fast5 team back in 2016. Sikholiwe Mdletshe, Jana Scholtz, and Ané Retief were selected to form part of the national U21 squad.
