Known to many as the Mother of the Nation, Nomzamo Winifred Madikizela-Mandela has died at the age of 81 on Monday 2 April 2018. She passed away after a period of illness that saw her in and out of hospital.
In honour of this struggle icon, the University of the Free State will fly its flags half-mast as a symbol of respect.
The university conveys its condolences to the family and friends of the late Ms Madikizela-Mandela.
The contributions made by Mama Winnie in the struggle against apartheid will live on, and the world will treasure her fierce spirit forever.
Rest in peace Mbokodo, Mother of the Nation.
Geography Journal a first

The Department of Geography at the University of the Free State launched a special edition of the South African Geography Journal, titled A Geography of the Free State. It is the first time in the history of the Society of South African geographers that a special issue of the journal, devoted to the geography of a single province has been published. Some of the guests who attended the launch were, from the left: Prof Gustav Visser (lecturer at the Department of Geography and co-author of the special edition of the journal), Prof Teuns Verschoor (Vice-Rector: Academic Operations at the UFS), Prof Peter Holmes (Head: Department of Geography and co-author of the special edition of the journal) and Prof Herman van Schalkwyk (Dean: Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the UFS).
