Poverty is a fundamental problem in housing settlements in South Africa. Prof. Pieter Verster from the Faculty of Theology at the University of the Free State (UFS) addressed this problem in the paper that he presented at an international conference in China. In his research on informal settlements around Bloemfontein he emphasised the important role that the church had to play in supporting the poor. The 7th international conference with the theme
“New Directions in the Humanities” took place in Beijing, China and was attended by 250 people from across the world.
