Our aim is to equip you with skills to become globally competitive graduates and contributors to faith communities.

An Overview of the Department

In our department, you will be able to study the following three disciplines:

  • Old Testament
  • New Testament
  • New Testament Greek and Early Christian Greek Literature

Vision for the Department Old and New Testament Studies

In our Old and New Testament Studies Department, we delve deep into the Bible, including the Old and New Testaments, and Early Christian Greek literature. We rigorously explore these texts in their original languages, applying their wisdom to our contemporary world with integrity, responsibility, and ethics. Through internationally acclaimed research and teaching, we nurture globally competitive graduates who serve faith communities across Africa and the world.

In order to achieve this, our immediate focus areas are:
  • Introducing students to the following disciplines of studying the Old and New Testament and New Testament Greek and Early Christian Greek Literature:
    • The methods used to expound the Biblical writings (methodology).
    • The practical exposition of the Biblical writings (exegesis).
    • How the Bible came into being (textual criticism and canonics).
    • The social and cultural milieus in which the Biblical writings originated (background).
    • How the central theological themes or message of the Biblical writings can be described (theology).
    • How the exegesis and theology of the Biblical writings can currently be made understandable (hermeneutics)—reading contextually (authors then and readers now), responsibly and ethically to our current situation.
    • The impact of all of this on one’s spiritual life (Biblical spirituality).
  • Introducing students to the following disciplines of studying New Testament Greek and Early Christian Greek Literature:

    • Greek grammar, literature, translation, and rhetoric
