Dr Mafu Rakometsi is an accomplished administrator whose career spans 35 years of service in the public sector with a special focus on basic education. Throughout his illustrious career, he has demonstrated his competencies as an astute executive manager, leader and administrator having served at different levels of the public sector.

He was born in 1962 and raised in Wesselsbron in the Free State.  He started his career in 1983 as a secondary school teacher at Rearabetswe (Odendaalsrus), later moving to Qwaqwa. He served as senior lecturer and head of department at Tshiya College of Education while lecturing in History at the Qwaqwa branch of the then University of the North.

Thereafter, Dr Rakometsi accepted a position as the head of subject advisory services at the Welkom education district, and rose through the ranks to become the Head of Examinations at the North West Department of Education, the Director and Chief Director for educational development and professional services at the Free State Department of Education, where he was later promoted to Superintendent-General: Education. In 2009, Dr Rakometsi was appointed chief executive officer of Umalusi.

He has provided strategic leadership at provincial, national and international levels. His significant achievements include stabilising the quality assurance processes for the schooling system at Umalusi and establishing strategic stakeholder relations with international bodies such as Cambridge International Examinations, the Office for Standards in Education in the UK and examination councils across the continent.

Dr Rakometsi is passionate about education and is deeply committed to improving the standards of education in South Africa  to afford all children equal opportunities for good quality education.
