The Karoo Institute was established in July 2004, with the purpose of promoting socio-economic and environmental research in the Karoo and Free State areas. Prof Doreen Atkinson is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Development Support (CDS), at the University of the Free State. She is also a Visiting Professor at the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) at Rhodes University.
