ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION: ASPIRATIONS, CHOICES AND OPPORTUNITIES (2017-2018)

This project is funded by the NRF/DST Chair. It assumes that access to higher education is or should be a public good and hence ought to expand people’s capabilities and agency freedoms to choose the lives they have reason to value. The aim is to understand - through diverse lives and voices - the underlying complexities of higher education decision-making, choices, and admissions processes.

The project also seeks to understand key points when aspirations and career choices are shaped, and what influences the process of decision-making at different stages. In addition, it will investigate the extent to which historical inequalities in access have been addressed and what new ones are emerging, including those related to wider societal changes.

Two interlinked projects are underway:

  1. A qualitative interview project in a collaborative team with post-doctoral research fellows
