Technical Management and Scenography 1 (THET1504)


The module focuses on the basic theory of technical aspects of the performing arts. Students are introduced to décor/scenery, properties, lighting, sound, costumes, theatre safety, theatre terminology and stage management. Students' knowledge related to the module content will be assessed continuously throughout the module.  

Unit 1: Theatre Safety.

In this unit students will gain understanding of, and maintain a safe environment in the theatre.

Unit 2: Theatre terminology

In this unit students will gain understanding of, and be be expected to know the correct theatre terminology and the application thereof

Unit 3: Technical aspects

In this unit students will investigate and demonstrate an understanding of the theory and basic design principles of décor/scenery, lighting for the theatre, and sound theory as well as the basic principles of properties. Students will be expected to compile a technical workbook as starting point for stage management.

Unit 4:  Scenography

Stage Make-up

In this learning unit you will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of the application of make-up. In this unit, you will be expected to apply makeup in the following styles:

  • Beauty and corrective make-up,
  • Old Age make-up,
  • Fantasy make-up.
Costume

In this learning unit, students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the basic development and the history of clothing in accordance with DRAH1504.

In this unit, you will be expected to:

  • Identify different historical costume silhouettes, details, garments and hairstyles,
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the typical garments worn with regards to traditional African-, Asian-, Greek-, Roman-, Gothic-, Renaissance- and Elizabethan Clothing; and
  • Conceptualise and design a unique and authentic costume design for specific characters in a play.
Basic Design Theory

Students will be introduced to the basic theories underlying set and costume design, and get a chance to practice design techniques in class.
