Data Governance and POPIA

The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) governs how South African organisations collect, store, use, and share personal information. Its purpose is to safeguard individual privacy and ensure that personal data is processed lawfully, responsibly, and securely.

Data governance refers to the university’s framework of policies, procedures, and standards that regulate how data is managed across its lifecycle. This includes data quality, access control, integrity, security, and compliance.

By implementing strong data governance aligned with POPIA requirements, the university ensures that:

  • Personal information is accurate, secure, and used only for legitimate purposes
  • Data handling practices are transparent and accountable
  • Risks of data breaches, misuse, or non‑compliance are minimised
  • Trust is strengthened between the institution, its stakeholders, and the public
