Sundry Bursaries

The University of the Free State has various bursaries available for general or specific fields of study, as well as bursaries linked to specific departments and faculties.

Description and conditions: Sundry bursaries

Students must apply for the bursaries listed in this section before 15 December each year, unless a bursary states a different internal closing date.

Separate application forms should be completed where required. Application forms are available from Juanita Buitendag in S014, George du Toit Administration Building: BuitendagJ@ufs.ac.za.

Christine Ferreira Bursary

The bursary is only available to needy descendants of the late Chief Commandant I.S. Ferreira, in life from De Stadesfontein, Ladybrand district.

EG Pelzer Bursary Fund

Only students from the Northern Cape region will be considered for this bursary.

Dr Edward “Tiffy” King Bursary

Heads of Departments must provide possible candidates from foreign countries who are already students at the UFS, or foreign students who have been granted permission to register at the UFS.

The UFS internal closing date will be provided. The following students will be considered:

  • Full-time doctoral studies
  • Part-time doctoral studies
  • Post-doctoral studies
  • Master’s degree studies

Model High School Bursary Fund

Former pupils of the Model High and Primary School will be given preference. Pupils from the city of Bloemfontein may also be considered for this bursary.

JC Steyn Bursary

Undergraduate students may apply. Three categories and two bursaries can be awarded by the Faculty of the Humanities through the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch, German and French.

Applicants must prove a generally good academic record, including in the year prior to the bursary application. Students need to apply at the department by the end of February.

Johan Badenhorst Memorial Bursary

The bursary is awarded to a full-time enrolled postgraduate Law student at the University of the Free State.

JF Havenga Bursary

Preference will be given to descendants of the late Mr Havenga’s brothers and sisters, and thereafter to descendants of the sister of his former wife, the late Anna Catharina Petronella Havenga, born Noeth.

Preference will be given in the following order:

  1. Hermanus Christoffel Havenga
  2. Barend Hermanus Havenga
  3. Sarel Pretorius Havenga
  4. Petrus Carolus Havenga
  5. Izak Frederik Havenga
  6. Johannes Christiaan Havenga
  7. Martha Maria Walters, born Havenga
  8. Jacob J Benson and Lovedale, Griekwastad children
  9. Petrus and Johanna Benson

Visser-Neser Bursary Fund

This funding is a grant made by the late TC Visser and his wife, RC Visser. The interest is used for allocations annually under the following conditions:

  • Applicants must be related to the donor and his wife.
  • The financial position of the trust beneficiary will be considered.
  • Bursaries are available for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, for full-time or part-time studies.
  • Students who attended one of the listed schools may also qualify for the bursary.

High Schools: Werda, Fauresmith; Jagersfontein; MT Steyn, Philippolis; Genl Hertzog, Smithfield; Louw Wepener, Wepener; Rouxville; Edenburg; Koffiefontein; Trompsburg; Christiaan de Wet, Dewetsdorp; Hendrik Potgieter, Reddersburg; Pellissier, Bethulie; Zastron.

Primary Schools: Springfontein; Luckhoff; Goedemoed-laerskool, Aliwal-Noord; Welbedachtdam-laerskool, Wepener; Hendrik Verwoerd; Rosary-laerskool, Zastron.

The above-mentioned bursaries may also be awarded for studies at any university in any other country outside the Republic of South Africa.

Five or more children at the UFS bursaries

Parents who have five or more children studying simultaneously at the UFS can apply for a bursary.
