Short CV

Rika van Zyl is a lecturer at the School for Financial Planning Law since 2008.

After obtaining her LL.B in 2007, she received her Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning in 2008 and completed her LL.M dissertation in 2013. She received her CFP® status in 2010 and is an admitted Advocate of the High Court of South Africa. In 2014 she received the LTC Harms award for the best publication in Mercantile Law by a young academic and was awarded an Eurosa Sholarship at the University of Utrecht, in the Netherlands in 2015.

She completed her doctoral thesis in Private Law, entitled “Die invloed van die stipulatio alteri op die inter vivos trust in Suid-Afrika: Voorgestelde oplossings vir beter regulering" (The influence of the stipulatio alteri on the inter vivos trust in South Africa: Proposed solutions for better regulation), in 2017 under the guidance of Prof. B.S Smith (UFS)

Her main areas of expertise are the development and application of the Roman-Dutch common law doctrine - the stipulatio alteri (contract in favour of a third person) on insurance and trusts, the inter vivos trust and financial wellness issues (including insurance, tax planning, law of succession, estate planning). She co-ordinates the LLM in Financial Planning Law and the Specialised Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning.

She has delivered a number of papers both at national and international conferences on related topic as well as on teaching and learning and authored a number of accredited research publications. She is a member of the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI).
