Is it compulsory to do all four (4) modules in one year?
No, if you registered before 2014, you have a maximum of four (4) years to complete the diploma. However, if you registered for the first time in 2014, you have three (3) years to complete the diploma.
If you should decide to do two modules per year, we suggest that you consider the following option:

First year: LFPE5800 and LFPC5800
Second year: LFPP5800 and LFPS5800 (Case Study)

What amount of time should I be spending on my studies during the year?
The credit per module determines the notional hours that should be spent on each module. As the modules are 40 credits each, x 10 hours gives you a total of 400 hours. One should remember that if you work in the field, you are learning (or should be) every day. If you spend (from 1 March till exam time) a total (not per module) of 3-4 hours a day on your studies (Sundays excluded), you should get through the work comfortably.

Why should I hand in my matric certificate?
It is not required for postgraduate students to submit their matric certificate.

What are the entrance requirements?
An applicable bachelor's degree, or
An applicable advanced diploma, or
An applicable qualification at NQF level 6 with 120 credits will allow admission to occasional studies for FBR711
. Should this module be passed in the first year, registration for the diploma will be granted and recognition for FBR711 will be awarded, or;
With consent from the Dean, at the recommendation of the Education Committee (appointed by the CFPL), in consultation with the Registrar, a student can also be admitted on the basis of a qualification regarded as equivalent or on condition that the student, in some other way, achieved a standard of competence which they regard as adequate for the purpose of the study.

Which modules are open book and which are not?
LFPE5800 – closed-book exam.
LFPP5800, LFPC5800, and LFPS5800 are open-book exams.

How many credits does the postgraduate diploma have and on what NQF level is it?
40 credits per module.
At completion of the diploma – 160 credits on an NQF level 8.

Is the Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning a pre-requisite for the Specialised Postgraduate Diploma (Advanced Diploma)?
No, it is not a pre-requisite. However, you do need to complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning in order to apply for CFP membership with the FPI.

Do we need to attend classes?
No, it is a correspondence course.

When does the course start?
The course starts when you receive the study material.
The study material will be sent to you via courier from the 2nd week in January until the end of the first week in February, depending on when your proof of payment of the minimum amount is received by our office.

When is the closing date for registration?
Registration closes on 31 January 2017. The minimum payment of R5 875 should be paid no later than 25 January.

When is the last day I can make payment to register?
25 January.


How much should I pay to register?
The minimum payment is R5 875. This is a partial payment towards course fees. Payment must be made 5 working days prior to registration.
If you only enrol for one module, the full course fees should be paid before registration can be processed.

When is the next payment due?
The minimum payment must be made before the registration closing date.
50% of the modules fees should be settled before 31 March.
Balance should be settled no later than 31 August.

International students must settle their account before 30 June.

Where can I obtain an invoice?
The University of the Free State does not provide tax invoices because there is no tax rendered on educational services.

What is the financial implication of cancellation?
Cancellations received before 15 February: Registration fee are not refundable. 100% of the module fees will be credited to the student account.
Cancellations after 15 February and before 15 August: 50% per module will be credited to the student account.
Cancellations after 15 August: No credit will be received.

Will I receive a refund if I cancel before 15 August:
A credit (discount) of 50% per module will be allocated to the student account. Therefore, the registration fee and 50% of the module fees will be forfeited. Please note that it is not 50% of fees paid that will be refunded. If the student account indicates a credit balance, a refund may be requested. If fees were not paid in full and there is a debit balance, the student will be liable to pay the outstanding amount in spite of the cancellation.

How do I request a refund?
Send an email to with your banking details, proof of payments, statement to verify bank details, and letter from the company (if employer paid) to confirm that refund may be paid to student. Refunds take approximately 10 working days.
