Dr Eben Coetzee
Area of expertise: International relations; nuclear weapons; nuclear terrorism; nuclear deterrence; war and peace; theory; international relations theory

Eben Coetzee is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Studies and Governance at the University of the Free State. He obtained his PhD in 2017, focusing on the continued relevance of structural realist Kenneth Waltz to understanding and explaining international politics. He completed his MA degree in 2010 at the University of the Free State, focusing in his dissertation on theoretical and historical questions in respect of the democratic peace proposition. He has delivered several international and national papers dealing specifically with nuclear weapons/nuclear deterrence, the democratic peace proposition, structural realism, and the idea of theory in international relations. His research interests include nuclear proliferation, nuclear deterrence, nuclear terrorism, structural realist theory, the nature of theory, and the history and philosophy of science.
