Dr Ashwill Ramon Phillips

Dr Ashwill Ramon Phillips is a senior lecturer in Criminology at the University of the Free State and an established scholar specialising in child justice, youth gangs, and occult-inspired criminal subcultures. He holds a PhD in Criminology and is internationally recognised for his pioneering research on gang dynamics, initiation rituals, symbolism, hierarchy, and the development of contemporary typologies for occult and devil-worshipping gangs in South Africa. His research is widely published in leading peer-reviewed journals and has been presented at major national and international conferences. Dr Phillips’ work bridges academic scholarship, policy development, and applied practice, contributing to evidence-based crime prevention strategies, offender rehabilitation, and youth justice reform.
Beyond academia, he serves as Senior Editor of Acta Criminologica, is an elected council member of the Criminological Society of Africa (CRIMSA), and regularly consults on gang-related crime, youth violence, and community safety. Dr Phillips is also an experienced postgraduate supervisor and programme coordinator, committed to research excellence, engaged scholarship, and social impact. His work continues to shape contemporary understandings of youth crime, gang subculture, and the occult dimensions of criminal identity in South Africa.
