Geography

The department resides in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, but also caters for students in the Faculty of the Humanities. It is a focused and dynamic department where students are more than just numbers. Students are exposed to real-world issues, and are taken on excursions to expose them to practical environmental and developmental problems.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) features strongly in undergraduate as well as postgraduate programmes of the department.

  • GIS specialist in private and public sectors
  • Work in local, provincial, and national government departments related to land-use change, strategic spatial planning, housing planning
  • Work in integrated development planning and local economic development
Postgraduate Studies

The following honours programmes are offered at the University of the Free State:
BA Honours in Geography
BSc Honours in Geography
BSc Honours in Geo-informatics
BSc Honours in Environmental Science

Take note of the following:
An average pass mark of 60% for all Geography modules at third-year (NQF 7) level is needed.  
In exceptional cases, the Department may grand admission by virtue of an oral or written assessment in which the student displays up-to-date knowledge of the theory and principles of the subject.
Depending on a student’s academic background, additional modules may be prescribed by the Department. 
Modules in each degree has their own specific requirements (refer to the relevant rule book).
A student’s skills in English will be assessed.  If the student does not meet the required standard, additional language modules will be prescribed.
