Students’ commitment to charity is believed to date back to the Victorian era – when students took time off from their studies to collect clothes (rags) for the poor. This charity work has stood the test of time and is still a major theme of student life, although the format has changed over the years to address current community needs.

Our own charity drive began in 1942, when the RAG project was established. As the winds of war swept over the globe, a few enterprising students decorated a vehicle in vibrant colours and drove through the streets of Bloemfontein to raise funds for charity. They managed to raise £53, a substantial sum of money at the time. This drive has since evolved into ACT.

ACT stands for: Active | Civic | Teaching

ACT is a collective concept for a number of projects that run throughout the year, with some colourful events unfolding at the beginning of each year, helping students to socialise and get to know one another.
