This short learning programme aims to bridge the gap in the education system by empowering learner facilitators in Foundation and Intermediate Phase Teaching to detect language literacy problems in time, and to develop suitable programmes to remediate problems.

The SLP provides information regarding the different types of language literacy problems experienced by learners. This includes the knowledge to identify these problems as well as sufficient knowledge and skills to support learners who struggle. Emanating from the above, this SLP expands on teachers’ repertoire of skills, specifically their knowledge about the different strategies available to identify, test, and assess language literacy competency among South African learners, whilst also providing training to teachers in the administration of these tests.

On completion of this short learning programme, attendees will be able to:

  • Outline the different types of language literacy-related problems;
  • Identify learners with language literacy-related problems;
  • Administer applicable tests to determine the language literacy problems of learners on a basic education level;
  • Analyse these tests, including the development of new materials when the necessary materials is not available;
  • Develop and implement individual and classroom support programmes, adapted to accommodate a learner’s/learners’ specific language/literacy-related challenges; and
  • Establish a support group with other facilitators, parents, and community members to support learners at risk for experiencing language literacy-related problems more effectively
