SASL Short Learning Programmes


The Department offers two South African Sign Language short learning programmes:

  • Basic Short Learning programme in South African Sign Language
  • Intermediate Short Learning programme in South African Sign Language


The purpose of the SLPs is to teach basic SASL skills that will enable participants to converse with Deaf people. It also aims to create understanding about Deafness and SASL amongst hearing people.


Who can enrol for these courses?

  • Anyone who wants to learn SASL. You can be a teacher, public servant, medical professional, a parent or caregiver of a deaf child, or anyone interested in learning the language.
  • A prerequisite is that you must be in possession of a senior certificate.
  • You must have access to a computer to download material as well as to participate in an online class once a week.
The SLPs can be offered in the following ways:
  1. Bloemfontein Campus
  2. Bloemfontein, venue provided by client
  3. Other cities, venue provided by client
  4. Online teaching
