By means of this short learning programme we hope to effect a better appreciation of the language contact situation in our country, an improved understanding of the variety of our languages and peoples and their intertwinement, the precious home-language assets of speakers, as well as numerous linguistic and sociolinguistic insights into the rich South African wealth of languages.

The content of this SLP is aimed at equipping interested persons from various disciplines with knowledge and background concerning the importance of language tourism, a concept that is already gaining ground in other multilingual countries. The course focuses on tourism, development of language, the interaction between language and human beings, language contact situations and the consequences of language contact.

On completion of this short learning programme attendees will be able to:

  • explain the functioning of the tourism sectors and identify the responsibilities of the different role players
  • identify the demand-and-supply cycle in their own environment and apply it at local level
  • provide examples of how tourism development plans can be applied and implemented at local level
  • explain where language comes from and provide examples of conspicuous and inconspicuous traces of their origins left by speakers
  • explain the dynamics of languages within language communities, as well as the interaction between language and human beings and the adaptations between languages effected by speakers in a language contact situation
