About the Survey

The Department initiated the Survey to collect and document place names in South African Sign Language in 2021. In 2022, the Department paired up with the Interdisciplinary Centre for Digital Futures (ICDF) to collaborate on the project, ‘Advancing SASL for 4IR Technological Development Using Place Names’.

Advancing SASL for 4IR Technological Development Using Place Names

Advancing SASL for 4IR Technological Development Using Place Names’ (March 2022-June 2025) was funded by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. Our department led the sociolinguistic and toponymic aspect, while the Interdisciplinary Centre for Digital Futures (ICDF) was responsible for the computational component of the project. Several products resulted from the project, including scholarly articles. The project reports can be found here: https://doi.org/10.38140/ufs.28847498.v3
