The division is responsible for the smooth management and running of the MBChB programme within the School of Medicine, through each aspect of the undergraduate programme being planned and run in the finest detail:

  • Compiling of all the year groups’ daily timetables, when and where each session, test or exam will be presented.
  • Support to students is presented on a wide scale – from the day a prospective student decides to apply for possible selection, until the student’s graduation ceremony and choice of placement for his/her internship after completion of his/her training.
  • Counselling on the programme to prospective students and parents.
  • Day-to-day help, guidance and support to students during their study years on any aspect where a student might come across a problem and need assistance.
  • Counselling and support is available for problems of a more personal nature, as well.

The division is situated in the Muller Potgieter Building and Dr  Yolandi Swart  is the head of the division.

Academic Activities

Undergraduate teaching:

The Division is responsible for the coordination of the planning, implementation and management of the new curriculum, and support in all the training activities with regard to organisational and logistic aspects.

The Division is also involved in undergraduate training of MBChBI students as well as the evaluation of presentations and projects during the Expo in the various modules.

Student support function:

The Division supports the undergraduate students with regard to logistic and organisational aspects in the medical training programme, e.g. printing and photocopying, as well as binding of assignments, research projects and additional study material, articles, etc.

  • Compilation, duplication and issuing of study material, semester planners and guides.
  • Supports students in respect of problem management, study problems, emotional problems, and refers students to experts in this regard. Provides students with guidance in respect of existing support structures and persons involved in the handling of financial problems, granting of bursaries, study problems, emotional problems, etc.
  • Deals with problems related to the compulsory 80% attendance requirement in the new curriculum, submission of medical certificates and all related procedures.
Logistic support:

Deals with problems related to lecture room clashes, obscurities in the programme, etc. Plans and coordinates the transport of students to and from external institutions for Community Service training programmes. Furthermore:

  • Logistic, organisational and coordinating functions with regard to the undergraduate training programme in the School of Medicine,
  • Control of lecture rooms: Rooms are maintained with regard to electronic equipment, sound equipment and other educational aids and
  • Attendance control - attendance lists are placed in cupboards in the lecture rooms for use by lecturers and collected after completion of the teaching sessions. Attendance data are keyed in on the student data system. Students failing to comply with the attendance requirement are identified at an early stage and informed of the problem, and the relevant student information is then communicated to the module leaders for further handling.
Computer-assisted training:
The Division manages the development of programmes for computer-assisted training in the School of Medicine.
