Definition of a medical emergency

Any medical condition as a result of sickness, injury or accident which occurs and where emergency medical assistance is necessary.

  • Ambulatory Patients

During UFS working hours, a patient who requires urgent medical assistance must report to the Health Centre where he/she will receive treatment and be referred to specialist services if necessary.

  • Non-Ambulatory Patients

ER 24 is the preferred provider for staff and students of the UFS. In case of an emergency which requires immediate emergency treatment or transport to a hospital (all hours), they may be directly contacted at:

0800 051 051

An emergency vehicle with trained personnel will be sent to the scene.

When calling the Ambulance:

• Stay calm
• Identify yourself
• Give your telephone number
• Identify the problem
• Give clear instructions regarding the exact location of the emergency
• Keep in touch with the staff at the Emergency Centre
• DO NOT put the phone down first
• Listen to the instructions and write it down if possible
• Stay with the patient until the ambulance arrives

Payment of account
The patient is responsible for the payment of the account. The doctor’s practice at the Health and Wellness centre will pay the account of the ambulance and the practice will recover it from the patient.
The patient does not have to pay immediately.
