Understanding HIV/AIDS Treatment
PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)
- Emergency HIV medication taken after a possible exposure to HIV
- Examples of exposure: unprotected sex, sexual assault, or needle injury
- Must be started within 72 hours (3 days)
- Taken daily for 28 days
- Helps prevent HIV from spreading in your body
- For emergency use only, not for regular protection
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)
- A daily pill taken before possible exposure to HIV
- Helps protect you if you are at higher risk of HIV exposure
- For example, if your partner is HIV-positive
- Or if you’re unsure about protection during sex
- You can speak to a nurse or counsellor at Kovsie Health to see if PrEP is right for you — it’s free, safe, and supportive
ARVs / ART (Antiretroviral Therapy)
- Medicines used to treat people living with HIV
- Treatment is called ART (Antiretroviral Therapy)
- ART helps to:
- Lower HIV levels in the body
- Protect and strengthen your immune system
- Support a healthy life
- Prevent HIV transmission when taken correctly
