Understanding HIV/AIDS Treatment

PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)

  • Emergency HIV medication taken after a possible exposure to HIV
  • Examples of exposure: unprotected sex, sexual assault, or needle injury
  • Must be started within 72 hours (3 days)
  • Taken daily for 28 days
  • Helps prevent HIV from spreading in your body
  • For emergency use only, not for regular protection

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)

  • A daily pill taken before possible exposure to HIV
  • Helps protect you if you are at higher risk of HIV exposure
    • For example, if your partner is HIV-positive
    • Or if you’re unsure about protection during sex
  • You can speak to a nurse or counsellor at Kovsie Health to see if PrEP is right for you — it’s free, safe, and supportive

ARVs / ART (Antiretroviral Therapy)

  • Medicines used to treat people living with HIV
  • Treatment is called ART (Antiretroviral Therapy)
  • ART helps to:
    • Lower HIV levels in the body
    • Protect and strengthen your immune system
    • Support a healthy life
    • Prevent HIV transmission when taken correctly
