In the fight to push through each day, without a doubt many still feel defeated and unable to carry on once the day ends. The Health and Wellness Department brought in emotional development psychologist, Sunell Wiemahn, to share with UFS staff members how they can better deal with the feeling(s) of being overwhelmed.

While it is easy for humans to feel overwhelmed by thoughts of the past and/or the future, Wiemahn explained that consciousness is a decision to stay in the now. She subsequently stated that, “To stay in the present is something that is very difficult for us.”

Wiemahn shared her six pocket techniques that helped doing basic activities that keep us mindful. These techniques were mindful breathing, listening, observation, taste, game of five, and thankful touch. In each of the techniques, Wiemahn challenges us to focus and be more appreciative of the mundane activities we take for granted. In the same way, new things are revealed to us through these exercises.

In being mindful, one is empowered, resulting in healthier living.
