“It has been proven that if you exercise, you are guaranteed to have lifelong health benefits,” said Arina Otto, Section Head: Staff Wellness at Health and Wellness. Under the theme "Commit to being fit," various exercise activities were presented, such as the Fitness test, Ideal body composition, Taebo, Zumba, Line-dancing, Pilates, Zumba Gold and Parkrun.
Staff Wellness partnered with Virgin Active, Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, Parkrun, Crossfit, Zumba, Pilates, Curves, Berocca, PVM, Herbalife, Bestmed, Discovery Vitality and Liberty to present this event.
“There are many other ways to exercise than just jogging, and all the partners introduced their various specialised concepts of exercise to say: let us all develop a culture of exercising – students and staff, young and old,” added Arina. Students and staff took part in the fitness test, signed up with fitness companies and received advice on their fitness challenges.
“In archaeology, we learn that human beings were created to move. Therefore, if you do not exercise, your quality of life becomes miserable,” said the nine-time winner of the South African Comrades Marathon, the legend Bruce Fordyce. He mentioned that the average South African has forgotten how to exercise, and this can be done by little things such as taking the stairs rather than the lift. Bruce also took part in the Parkrun event at our Cross Country Track as part of the Exercise is Medicine programme.
