As the South Campus is seen as very strategic in the change of the university, UFS staff members from both the South and the Bloemfontein Campuses were elated and filled with great anticipation about the launch of a new Health and Wellness Centre on the South Campus. Guest speakers included Prof Nicky Morgan and Prof Daniela Coetzee, who clarified the role of this centre in connecting the two campuses. Grant Lottering, ultra-endurance cyclist and speaker, was the keynoter speaker at the event.

Lottering shared his story and journey as an ultra-endurance cyclist with attendees, and how at the peak of his career, an accident caused him to take inventory of his life. As a result of his physical health, Lottering was able to survive a near fatal accident which could have cost him his life. Having spent many days in the ICU, his doctor at the time affirmed that he “trained to survive”. While doctors told him that he would never be able to ride a bicycle again, Lottering was determined to return to his passion.

Having beaten the odds, and begun the journey, Lottering learned to, “Give no room to doubt, lack of commitment, negativity, and fear.” He firmly believes that we each need to believe in what we are capable of.

Lottering closed off on an encouraging note to staff, “Set yourself an im’possible goal.” - Hatsu Mphatsoe
