Introduction
The Lekgotla Men's Well-being Project is a comprehensive initiative focused on tackling the complex challenges faced by men in modern society. By prioritising mental health, emotional resilience, and the strengthening of social support systems, the project seeks to foster holistic well-being, empowering men to overcome obstacles and excel in all areas of their lives.
Vision 130 Alignment
The Lekgotla Men's Well-being Project is deeply aligned with the University of the Free State’s Vision 130, which emphasises inclusivity and holistic development. By creating a safe space for men to engage in open dialogues on mental health, emotional resilience, and well-being, the project fosters a culture of support and empowerment. Through targeted health initiatives and resilience-building programmes, it equips participants with the tools to prioritise their well-being, strengthen their personal growth, and collectively uplift one another, contributing to a more resilient and connected community.
Empowering Conversations
The Lekgotla Men's Well-being initiative hosted an Offenders' Dialogue on the South Campus, addressing gender-based violence and offences against women. This platform encouraged reflection, accountability, and actionable steps to foster respect and drive positive societal change.
The dialogue emphasised the importance of men taking an active role in combating gender-based violence. By sharing insights and personal experiences, attendees explored ways to challenge harmful behaviour and build a culture rooted in respect and equality.
Embracing Dialogue for Change
The Lekgotla Men's Well-Being Dialogue on the South Campus brought together a dynamic blend of participants, united by a shared commitment to confronting gender-based violence and fostering accountability. Students eagerly engaged with the event’s vision, embodying a spirit of collaboration and a desire to challenge societal norms.
Mask Unity Men's Mental Health Conference
The second Annual MaskUnity Men's Conference, hosted by the University of the Free State (UFS) and its partners on 27-28 August 2024, was a transformative initiative aimed at addressing the multifaceted challenges men face in contemporary society. With a focus on issues such as mental health, gender-based violence, substance abuse, and responsible manhood, the event sought to redefine masculinity through open dialogue and education. By bringing together male students and staff from the UFS, CUT, the Sol Plaatje University, Walter Sisulu University, and various TVET colleges, the conference fostered a collaborative environment for self-reflection, learning, and personal growth.
Lekgotla Men's Sports Festival
The Social Support Office proudly hosted the Men's Sports Day Festival on the South Campus on 5 October 2024. The event, running from 10:00 to 15:00, brought students together for an action-packed day of soccer, netball, basketball, and chess. This festival was more than just a showcase of athletic talent; it provided an opportunity for students to engage in physical activities, build camaraderie, and relieve academic stress. By fostering a sense of community and promoting mental and physical well-being, the event highlighted the importance of social support in creating a balanced and inclusive campus experience.
