About the Programme

The candidates in the Future Generation Professoriate Group (FGP) have completed their PhDs in the last five to eight years and are on the cusp of promotion to more senior academic levels. Seven of the 24 members of the current FGP group have achieved Y-rating in the past two years. A number of candidates are also previous nominees for teaching and learning awards, as well as community service awards in their faculties. The main objectives of the programme are to support candidates towards NRF rating and making a successful transition from Y to C rating, establishing a productive research group with postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students, and developing their teaching competencies. The programme also provides opportunities for candidates to develop their leadership skills, which will assist them in their current and future leadership roles. The mentoring programme prepares candidates for international funding opportunities and fellowships in order to expand their network of international collaborators and create opportunities to spend sabbatical periods at international institutions. During 2020, six candidates of the programme were promoted to Associate Professor level.
