The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of the Free State (UFS) celebrated World Planning Day on 8 November 2007 with a lecture by Prof. Martin Drake, a retired professor from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). In his lecture, Prof. Drake discussed the development of urban planning and the need for planning, with a focus on Africa.
