Who is the Department of Cardiology?
The University of the Free State (UFS) Department of Cardiology is an integral part of the School of Medicine of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Free State. It functions in close cooperation with the Departments of Internal Medicine and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
The department is responsible for the clinical care and treatment of patients with cardiac disease, the appropriate training of health care workers in the specialty of cardiology and the conducting of applicable research.
Universitas Hospital is our clinical training facility, located close to the university. Training takes place in a parallel medium environment using English and Afrikaans. Students can complete their training in the language of their choice.
The department is involved in the training of not only medical personnel but also of other health care workers in the field of Cardiology, e.g. Clinical Technologists and Radiographers.
Services include:

A significant clinical service including acute coronary care (CCU), cardiac ward patient care and cardiac outpatient care.

Specialized services include cardiac catheterization, percutaneous transluminal coronary angiography, coronary stenting, echocardiography, stress testing, electrophysiological services including pacemaker placement and holter monitoring.
